This study investigated the effect of the synergistic addition of Gd and Mn on the microstructure and mechanical properties of extruded Mg-1Bi alloys. The grain size of an Mg-1Bi alloy decreased sharply when either only Gd or Mn was added to the alloy, whereas a strong grain refining effect was verified upon the co-addition of Gd and Mn. The Mg-1Bi and Mg-1Bi-0.4Mn alloys exhibited typical strong basal textures, whereas the Mg-1Bi-0.3Gd and Mg-1Bi-0.3Gd-0.6Mn alloys showed weakened extrusion direction (ED)-split textures.
