周敦颐是理学的开山鼻祖，他所创立的理学思想成为湖湘学派的指导思想，并对后世湖湘学子产生了重要影响。周敦颐的理学思想、教育思想、人才思想对湖湘文化的形成起了十分关键的作用，标志着湖湘文化的形成；同时，对湖南人才的发展也起了十分重要的作用，在他的直接或间接影响下，湖南先后出现了南宋时期、明后期和清中期三个人才小波峰，并出现了湖南近现代史上著名的五大人才群体。

Zhou Dunyi is the founder of Neo-Confucianism. Neo-Confucianism founded by Zhou Dunyi became the guiding ideology for scholars of Huxiang school. Zhou Dunyi＇s Neo-Confucian thoughts and his thoughts on education and talent cultivation played an important role in the forming of Huxiang Culture and in cultivating talented persons in Hunan.
