上海作为清末民国最为著名的国际化大都市,汇聚了多种文化形态,吸引了大批旧式文人,报刊为文人的雅集唱和创造了前所未有的条件,自由吟咏、自由表达的意识以及文人社团自觉的传播意识得到了充分体现,上海作为文学创作的专门题材得到前所未有的重视.文人社团通过描写新事物、新风气,凸显上海的文明、时尚和摩登,并借助对上海本地历史遗迹、具体物象的吟咏,勾勒其兼容并包的形象.同时,他们也对上海的阴暗面进行了审视和反思.他们笔下的上海既是新奇的、物欲的、诱惑的,又是古老的、超然的、怡乐的,折射出现代人行为的矛盾性和精神的困惑,触及了"现代化"背景下生存、生活的时代命题.
