陶澍和严如熤都是"湘系经世派"的重要成员,对嘉道年间经世思潮的兴起,都有过重要的贡献.陶、严两家是世交,陶澍、严如熤不仅十分友好,联系密切,而且都能勤政恤民,为老百姓做了不少好事.特别是他们提倡经世致用之学,主张舆地经世,他们的《蜀輶日记》、《苗防备览》、《三省边防备览》等著作,不仅是当时经世实学的楷模,对政治、经济、军事都有积极的意义,而且对后世也产生了深刻的影响.

Tao Shu and Yan Ru-yu were important members of application of administering state affairs in Hunan. They had made great contribution to the practice of managing state affairs when the thought of managing state affairs brought forth in the Emporer Jia-qing time in the Qing Dynasty（1796-1821）.
